When the hob rotates one revolution, it is equivalent to the rack moving one cutting tooth in the normal direction. The continuous transmission of the hob is like an infinitely long rack moving continuously. When the hob and the hob blank are forced to mesh strictly according to the gear and rack transmission ratio, the envelope of the hob cutting teeth at a series of positions forms the involute tooth profile of the workpiece. With the vertical feed of the hob, the desired tooth profile can be hobbed out. Hobbing is currently the most widely used gear cutting method, which can process involute gears, circular arc gears, cycloidal gears, sprockets, ratchet wheels, worm gears, and enveloping worms, with a precision generally reaching DIN 4~7 grade.
